Summary
This project reimagines traditional Japanese timber joinery to develop sustainable, reusable building systems for modern construction. Historical joints will be digitized, their geometries optimized through simulation and machine learning, and their performance validated via prototyping and testing. By bridging ancient craftsmanship with contemporary engineering, the research addresses critical challenges in construction sustainability, material circularity, and climate resilience, offering a novel pathway to reduce embodied carbon and promote regenerative practices in the built environment.
